Special
Economic Zone (SEZ) is a specifically delineated duty free enclave and shall be
deemed to be foreign territory for the purposes of trade operations and duties
and tariffs.
India was one of the first in Asia to recognize the effectiveness of the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) model in promoting exports, with Asia's first EPZ set up in Kandla in 1965. With a view to overcome the shortcomings experienced on account of the multiplicity of controls and clearances; absence of world-class infrastructure, and an unstable fiscal regime and with a view to attract larger foreign investments in India, the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) Policy was announced in April 2000. This policy intended to make SEZs an engine for economic growth supported by quality infrastructure complemented by an attractive fiscal package, both at the Centre and the State level, with the minimum possible regulations.

Thoothukudi

Kattabomman
Whereas a submarine on the surface
can transmit and receive wireless messages just like a ship can, submerged
submarines can only receive wireless messages on Very Low Frequency (VLF). VLF
transmitters require huge antennae suspended high above the ground.
The initial discussions were solely
with the Russian side, from whom the submarines had been acquired. Inquiries
with western manufacturers indicated that better technology might be available
from America. Parallel discussions were therefore pursued, both with Russia and
with America.
Between 1979 and 1984, modalities
were worked out for American company in collaboration with an Indian company to
assume responsibility for the detailed design, manufacture, site installation
and commissioning of the VLF transmitting station.
During the same period, the Defence
Research and Development Organisation designed the antennae to be fitted in the
submarine for receiving VLF transmissions.
Installation of the VLF Transmitter
commenced in 1987. Trials completed in 1989. On 20 Oct 90, the VLF Transmitting
Station was commissioned as INS.
Tirunelveli
Tirunelveli is a city in Tamil Nadu
state of southern India . It is the headquarters of Tirunelveli District.
Tirunelveli is about 2000 years old and is a town of old tradition . Tirunelveli
was the capital of the Pandya Kingdom for some time, next to Madurai .
Tirunelveli is situated on the banks
of the river Thamiraparani; it is on the way to Kanniyakumari from Madurai . It
is a twin town - Thirunelveli and Palayamkottai. The town is located roughly
400 kilometers away from Chennai.
The temple of Nellaiappar and
Kanthimathi is situated in the centre of Tirunelveli. The temple is dedicated
to Lord Shiva and worshipped as Nellaiappar. Thiru-Nel-Veli (Thiru - Shri, Nel
= Paddy, Veli = Fence). It is believed that food grains collected for worship
at the temple were protected from the floods by the fence, hence the name Nel
Veli came.

famous Courtallam Waterfalls are located in Tirunelveli District . Tirunelveli

Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project
Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project,
which envisages dredging of a ship channel across the Palk straits between
India and Srilanka, is finally taking shape. The project will alllow ships
sailing between the east and west costs of India to have a straight passage
through India's territorial waters, instead of having to circumvent Sri Lanka.
This will lead to a saving of upto 424 nautical miles (780 Km) and upto to 30
hours in sailing time.
Two channels will be created - one
across north of Adam's Bridge (the chain of islets and shallows linking India
with Sri Lanka) South - east of Pamban Island and another through the shallows
of Palk Bay, deepening the Palk straits. The total length of these two channels
would be 89 Kms.
